Planning Division

Division Description

The Planning Division provides professional technical advice and recommendations on applications to the Planning Board, Design Review Commission, and River Corridor Review Commission. It manages the City’s Brownfields Program, aiming to remediate contaminated Brownfield properties by identifying and assessing contamination, developing remediation strategies, and cleaning them up for future development.

It also develops and maintains the City’s Comprehensive Plan, which ensures other regulatory documents, (such as the Zoning Ordinance) are consistent with the Comprehensive Plan’s goals, policies, and objectives; as well the Capital Improvement Program, (CIP) which contains a schedule of physical plans and facilities to be procured over a five-year period which helps create a framework for decision makers to thoughtfully consider the City’s priorities and allocate its limited resources responsibly.

The Division works closely with other divisions of the Department of Planning & Development, the Department of Public Works, the Mayor’s Office, and the City Council to develop long-term strategies, projects, and opportunities that provide positive economic growth for the City, while maintaining responsible land development and regulatory policies.
