Cooper, Morse, and Blackstone streets targeted for road improvements

WOONSOCKET, RI: The 2016 Road Reconstruction Program has continued through the fall season as work on the reconstruction of Cooper Avenue and Morse Avenue began this week. Road improvements on Blackstone Street are scheduled to be completed after Cooper and Morse are finished and at the conclusion of the demolition of two blighted properties at 58-60 & 68-70 Blackstone Street.

“The Woonsocket Department of Public Works is hard at work continuing our aggressive road reconstruction program,” said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. “Thanks to efficient planning under Director D’Agostino and some cooperative weather, three more streets will be completed before our 2016 program winds down. The City’s investment in an asphalt paver and training our public works staff has saved the City money while improving our infrastructure.”

To date, the 2016 Road Reconstruction Program has repaved or reconstructed 12 streets since work began in May. Road improvements have been performed almost in their entirety by the Woonsocket Department of Public Works, as a result of the purchase of an asphalt paver, which has allowed the City to realize project cost savings of approximately 30-40%.

“Smart investments in the Department of Public Works department have paid off big this year,” said Public Works Director Steven D’Agostino. “Every freshly paved road is a testament to the innovative approach this administration took to addressing our community’s infrastructure needs. Our public works crews really stepped up and have delivered in a big way for our community.”

This year’s road improvements focused on surface paving and a more intensive reconstruction process, in which the entire pavement structure is replaced, resulting in superior long term performance. Roads included in the 2016 program included residential streets and major thoroughfares like Cass Avenue, which records indicate was last paved 22 years ago.
