Woonsocket begins 2017 Road Reconstruction Program

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt today announced the start of Woonsocket’s 2017 Road Reconstruction Program as Highway Division crews began work on Bennett Street in the Bernon section of the City. This year’s program aims to continue the success of the only municipal in-house road reconstruction program in the state.

“Woonsocket is setting an example and saving tax dollars by training our Highway Division to pave roads in neighborhoods throughout the City,” said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. “We have been able to make significant investments in our infrastructure, which is a key component to economic development in the City. Director D’Agostino has literally paved the way for this innovative program, to the benefit of our hardworking taxpayers.”

The 2017 Road Reconstruction Program will target City streets identified by the Department of Public Works as being in need of rehabilitation. Past year’s programs successfully repaved or reconstructed twenty roads throughout Woonsocket. Road reconstruction is a process in which the entirety of the road’s old surface is beyond repair and is excavated and replaced. Repaving involves removal of just the uppermost road surface which is then repaved.

“Our Highway Division has really stepped up to the plate and done some great paving work over the past two seasons,” said Steven D’Agostino, Director of Public Works. “Moving the program in-house allows the City to save in the ballpark of 30-40% on the cost of paving a road, which adds up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings every year. Investing in our public infrastructure and skill development for our Public Works Department Staff is keeping money in the pockets of City residents.”

The 2017 Road Reconstruction Program will target city streets for reconstruction and repaving throughout the warm-weather months and into the fall. City Hall will provide further notifications of road paving as the program progresses.
