Morin Street to Shine, Woonsocket Schedules August Pilot Testing of LED Streetlight Alternatives

Woonsocket, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced today that Morin Street will be the pilot testing site to assist the City of Woonsocket in determining which type of LED streetlight fixture will be installed across the City. Morin Street was selected because it is a residential area that has sufficient space to test four different types of LED streetlight fixtures side-by-side against the current high pressure sodium lamps. The test site will be operational sometime during the first half of August and the prospective lights will be evaluated by the City across different levels of lamp brightness which will be adjusted by a controller unit.

|Mayor Baldelli-Hunt stated, “We are excited to be entering the pilot testing phase of our LED streetlight replacement project and chose Morin Street to do so because of the physical layout of the street and our ability in that location to adequately view four different types of LED lighting alternatives against what we have now.” The Mayor added, “Whichever LED light fixture we end up choosing will be a benefit to our City because it will save money, require less maintenance, provide clearer, safer illumination, and be better for the environment.”

Public Works Director Steven D’Agostino stated, “We strongly feel that observing the various LED streetlight fixture alternatives on a residential street is important to our choosing the one that is the best fit for Woonsocket. We want our LED streetlight evaluation process to be thorough and this pilot test site will play a big factor in our decision.”

The City will be testing four types of new LED streetlight fixtures on Morin Street that differ in important lighting characteristics. The four prospective LED lights will be displayed side-by-side against the current high pressure sodium streetlights with every other pole carrying one of the new LED lights. Each of the four prospective LED light fixtures will be on a controller that will enable the lights to be viewed and evaluated at various levels of brightness.
