Brownfields Program
The City is committed to remediating contaminated brownfield properties, which create environmental and public health concerns, depress economic development and property values, and can be eyesores. Cleaning up brownfields requires sustained effort to identify potential brownfield sites, assess contamination, develop remediation strategies, and, finally, clean them up for future development. The Brownfields Program has had notable successes:
- It developed a City-wide prioritized potential Brownfields Site Inventory Map.
- After fire destroyed the mills along Hamlet Ave. and Florence Dr., it assessed and remediated the property, which is now the site of the City's middle school.
- It assessed and remediated the former landfill along the Blackstone River so it could be converted to River's Edge Park.
Cleaning up Brownfields also requires funding. The City regularly applies for grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) and the RI Department of Environmental Management, (RIDEM) for assessment, remediation, and cleanup activities at identified Brownfield properties throughout the City. With this funding, the Brownfields Program will have the environmental assessments and remedial strategies developers need to make informed decisions when considering redevelopment opportunities for these challenging properties.
