Job Lot Delivers Books to Woonsocket Elementary School Students

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Ocean State Job Lot, in partnership with the City of Woonsocket and the Woonsocket Education Department kicked off an initiative to deliver reading books to elementary school students in the City at a morning event at Globe Park Elementary School. More than six thousand books were donated by Job Lot, which will place a book in the hands of every elementary student in the City.

“Ocean State Job Lot has demonstrated, yet again, why we consider them an amazing community partner through this incredible act of generosity,” said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. “Reading is a foundational skill that should be nourished in school and at home. The City is grateful for its relationship with Job Lot and the support they have given our community.”

At today’s kickoff event in the cafeteria of Globe Park Elementary School, two classes of second and third-grade students received books after a short ceremony led by Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt and Superintendant Patrick McGee. Book drop-offs will be made to remaining schools in the community by volunteers from the Woonsocket Police and Fire Departments next week.

“Even in our increasingly digital age, literacy remains so important to a child’s development and educational success. And nothing fosters literacy like encouraging a child to sit down and read a book. We hope that by putting these new books in children’s hands, they will feel excited and curious about reading them,” says David Sarlitto, executive director of Ocean State Job Lot.

Today’s event marks the second time this year that Ocean State Job Lot’s charitable arm has made its presence felt in the Woonsocket community. In February, Job Lot donated new winter coats to Woonsocket residents in need through a partnership with the Woonsocket Fire Department.
