Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a vibrant, urban community that offers the right blend of exciting city life and cozy small town comfort. Woonsocket is the proud home of many regional attractions including The Museum of Work & Culture, located in downtown Woonsocket, which displays artifacts and memorabilia from the City's unique past, including its prominent role in the American Industrial Revolution. Its permanent exhibit, Treasury of Life, showcases the history of French-Canadian immigrants settling with their families in Woonsocket. Residents and visitors can also explore our new Veterans Memorial Museum located at 78 Earle Street, which pays homage to the brave men and women of Woonsocket who have served our country.
The Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre has been restored to its original splendor, as a classic 1920’s Vaudeville Theatre. It offers a variety of entertainment including musicals, comedy shows, murder mysteries, dramatic performances, and tribute bands. Performances by the Stadium Theatre’s in-house repertory company, Encore, include over 50 Broadway-style reviews and full-scale major musicals.
For those who prefer outdoor activities, Woonsocket offers the scenic bike path along the beautiful Blackstone River, as well as several athletic and recreational facilities. River Island Arts Park located on the Blackstone River is home to free concerts, Movies in the Park, and Arts & Cultural Festivals throughout the year. In the summer, residents and visitors alike, are able to cool off at the new splash park at World War II Memorial Park on Social Street.
The Woonsocket Harris Public Library, opened in 1868, was the first public library in the state of Rhode Island and is one of the largest in Northern Rhode Island. It was originally located directly below historic Harris Hall on Main Street, the room where Abraham Lincoln delivered an anti-slavery address in 1860. The library offers a wide range of programs such as children’s knitting classes, computer classes, and zumba classes as well as story time, book clubs and writing classes.
The annual Autumnfest celebration on Columbus Day weekend is a three-day festival of food, arts and crafts, amusement rides, live entertainment, and a spectacular fireworks display. The weekend culminates in a 10-division parade on Columbus Day which attracts participants and bands from all over the Northeast.
My administration is working hard to maintain a business-friendly community that continues to attract new enterprises. Our City’s schools offer a variety of options to families so that all students have the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Our excellent public safety agencies, including police, fire and rescue, ensure that our residents receive the best service and care possible in an emergency. I will continue to work with my administration and the citizens of Woonsocket on issues such as education, fiscal stability, and quality of life.
