WOONSOCKET YOUTH BASKETBALL PLAYERS “LIGHT-EM-UP” AT WORLD WAR II VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced today that newly installed LED lights fully illuminating the two basketball courts at World War II Veterans Memorial Park were officially turned on last night during a ceremony attended by neighborhood youth, Fire Alarm Superintendent Steve Gamache, Freshmen Basketball Coach Chris Beauchamp, Middle School Basketball Coach Tom Gray, Public Safety Director Eugene Jalette, Fire Chief Paul Shatraw, Police Chief Thomas F. Oates, III and the Mayor. An entertaining evening began with free Italian Frozen Ice provided by a Nessa Snack truck and a raffle of two coveted Wilson Evolution basketballs. Words from the Mayor preceded a ribbon cutting that signaled the inaugural lighting of the two courts.

“Basketball is a fun, affordable sport that teaches kids important values like teamwork, commitment and self-sacrifice, which increases their confidence and helps build a foundation for success both on and off the court,” stated Mayor Baldelli-Hunt. “The basketball courts at World War II Veterans Memorial Park are very popular and using CDBG grant funds for LED lights that will give Woonsocket kids the chance to play basketball for several more hours a night was a ‘slam dunk’ decision,” added the Mayor.

The state-of-the-art LED sport lights were purchased with CDBG grant funding, come with a 25-year full maintenance warranty, operate on a timer, and provide “green” low cost lighting. The City intends to furnish lighting for the two basketball courts during the summer until 11:00 PM daily.
